The villages on the island Schouwen-Duiveland in the Dutch province Zeeland are all part of one municipality. On the edge of the Zierikszee architect agency RAU & partners have designed a modern and rather high town hall for the island. The architects have assured that each office in the building has to some extent a wide view of the surrounding area. As the building faces outwards and brings the environment in sight, I have designed a carpet for this building which aims to direct the attention to the inside environment and to make all the different spaces tangible. The design is made up of a play of colour in intertwining waves, which are laid without regard to the floor plan of the building. Each office has a carpet that shows another colour fragment so no space is identical. When walking through the building it will become obvious that each small room or even a corridor is part of a bigger whole. This effect will contribute to the feeling of spaciousness. In the downstairs open space of the building the carpet shows the twirling of a vortex.
